Specialisation in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Healthcare Products

Biopharmaceuticals and Biomanufacturing

Why choose the BPS Master’s degree?

The aims of the programme are to provide students with scientific and technical expertise in the development, optimisation and industrialisation of bioprocesses, production control and quality management for biotherapeutics and advanced therapy medicinal products, as well as strong skills in project management, communication and team management within a highly regulated industry.

The production of bioproducts and biomedicines for innovative therapies requires processes and production tools that utilise living organisms on an unprecedented and constantly evolving industrial scale. The pharmaceutical and biomedical industries must adapt to these changes, which require multidisciplinary skills combining biology, engineering and management. In partnership with the Faculty of Pharmacy at Nantes University and Oniris, our programme is designed using a skills-based approach to meet these strategic needs.

The Bioproduction and Health specialisation is divided into five teaching modules (UE), four of which are specific to this specialisation and shared with students from another specialisation within the Master’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Health Products – the Biotherapies and Innovative Therapeutic Drugs specialisation – and one core module of the Master’s programme (modern language, quality assurance, career development). Teaching takes the form of lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, problem-based and project-based learning, and work placements. Most teaching takes place at Oniris, Rue de la Géraudière, whilst the remainder is held at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Rue Bias; both are located in Nantes.

The BPS Master’s programme is designed to develop students’ skills through our competence-based approach, using authentic and integrated learning situations. You will therefore be able to :

  • Assess and ensure the compliance and quality of a bioproduct (biopharmaceutical) or a process as part of a continuous improvement approach
  • Working as a team, providing feedback, drawing up task charts, identifying the skills and people needed to carry out a project
  • Propose an experimental approach to assess the feasibility of an innovative technological solution, production method or control method
  • Draft an experimental protocol, a procedure and a scientific report

To develop these skills, our teaching focuses on :

  • Quality assurance
  • Statistics and biostatistics
  • Quality control and regulatory affairs
  • 4R medicine
  • Molecular biotherapies: therapeutic antibodies
  • Innovation in healthcare
  • Innovative therapies
  • Downstream and upstream processes
  • Experimental design
  • Process optimisation
  • Management tools and entrepreneurship
  • Validation and qualification of ZAC
  • Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and quality management
  • Automation and process flow charts
  • Bioprocess extrapolation
  • Statistical control of bioprocesses
  • Bioprocess control strategy

Assessment is carried out on an ongoing basis, using a variety of assessment methods: written assignments, presentations and reports.

A compulsory work placement lasting 24 to 26 weeks will begin in March.
