Welcome to ONIRIS

Nantes Atlantic National College of Veterinary Medicine, Food Science and Engineering

ONIRIS is a higher education establishment under the jurisdiction of the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. It is deeply rooted in its surrounding area, with a European outlook and is involved in a wide range of issues including animal health and public health, clinical and biomedical fields, health biotechnologies, food science and processing technology.
ONIRIS aims at taking an active part in the domains of nutrition, human and animal health, while making its contribution to the concept of “One medicine, one health”. In addition, the College contributes to the cross-disciplinary approach of environmental issues and sustainable development.

ONIRIS trains about 1,200 students by offering two main degree programmes

Veterinary Medicine (DVM). This programme aims at turning out high-level pathologists and biologists through research and clinical training via its veterinary hospital with a European dimension.

- Graduate  Level Degree in Engineering with two specialities:

  • “Food Science/Nutrition”
  • “Health Biotechnologies

The training programme in both specialities is strongly linked to the industrial sector and benefits from highly specific vocational and research tools such as the Pilot Plant Hall of Technology.

Oniris is the only French establishment in which veterinary students can interact with engineering students in food science/nutrition or health biotechnologies.
While these two programmes remain independent from one another, they do collaborate in order to diversify and increase employment opportunities.

Thus, one of the strong specificities of ONIRIS as regards nutrition and food innovation consists in offering a cross-disciplinary approach before and after production and/ as well as integrating the issues linked to:
- the sanitary conditions which must be taken into account at all steps,
- the industrial process,
- nutrition/health,
- pleasure,
- human and social sciences.
ONIRIS’ added value, i.e. the synergy between both degree courses, has also resulted in our new speciality “Health biotechnologies” which aims at training well-equipped engineers for tomorrow’s pharmaceutical industry.

All in all, ONIRIS’ ambition is to train high-level professionals who can deal with the important international stakes involved in health and nutrition.
The speeding-up of the internationalization process is a major point in Oniris’ development strategy over the next 5 years. The structuring objective is to raise the number of foreign students up to 25% of the total student population at ONIRIS and to ensure that 25% of classes be taught in English.

The students get involved in a socially responsible School via, for example, their commitment to social opening actions such as the ”ropes of success”

Thanks to its accreditation for Doctoral Degrees, the students’ »research passport » and its range of Master’s degrees, ONIRIS has a very attractive teaching and research system in partnership with the various research institutes such as INRA, INSERM, CNRS, IFREMER, ANSES.

Four main areas of research distinguish ONIRIS:

  • « Human Health, Biomedical and clinical Research, Animal Models ». The aim is to understand pathological mechanisms and produce innovative treatments for human and animal diseases, in close collaboration with the regional health pole.
  • « Livestock Health Control ». The aim is to take up challenges of food sufficiency by preventing and managing animal health crises. It also means ensuring human health by preventing chemical or biological hazards in the food chain;
  • « Food Quality and Safety ».The objective is to develop knowledge and methods so as to ensure the production of high-quality foodstuffs in terms of safety, nutrition and taste.
  • « Food processing Technology, Management and Sustainability ». The aim is to create and assess innovative and sustainable food processes in order to produce foodstuffs in compliance with industrial strategies and which come up to the consumer’s expectations.

The school is part of the University of Nantes-Angers-Le Mans consortium of centres for higher education, of the Western France Pole of Competency within the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. It is also a member of various competitive poles (Valorial, Atlanpôle biotherapies etc).

To all of you, welcome to Nantes in the Pays de la Loire Region, where the quality of life and the thriving cultural scene are particularly appealing.
