Biology, Epidemiology and Risk Analysis in Animal Health

Unit presentation

BIOEPAR is a Oniris-INRA joint research group (UMR). Its research activities aim at producing scientific knowledge and methods for the management of animal health and veterinary public health, meeting the challenges  of drug use reduction and animal welfare promotion. The scientific disciplines involved are epidemiology, epidemiological modelling, animal health economics, pathogen and host-pathogen biology, and population biology. Research questions are addressed at different levels of integration. For pathogens and vectors, the objectives are to describe their variability and the evolution of their populations in time and space. At the animal (-host) level, the objective is to understand the mechanisms underlying the interactions between hosts, pathogens and vectors. At the level of animal populations, the objectives are to identify the key factors of disease occurrence, to understand and predict health propagation, and to assess existing or possible control actions. At the farm and region scale, the objectives are to measure the effects of animal health disorders (endemic and epidemic diseases) on animal productivity and to assess control actions efficacy.

The Unit consists of 47 permanent staff (Oniris and INRA), 7 contract/temporary staff, 12 PhDs. Research is organized in 4 teams :

  • Observational epidemiology (EPID) team
  • Modelling and decision (MODEC) team
  • Variability, Infection and Pathogenicity (VIP) team
  • Pathogen and vector populations (PVP) team
